Hello Amy, I am an actor from Mexico, currently living and working in LA. I am not what the media typically portrays as Latino – I have dirty blonde hair and blue eyes, so people assume I am Caucasian. I also have a slight accent, so people then have trouble casting me as Caucasian, and I seem to be stuck in between being too Latino to play white, and too white to play Latino. Any assistance you can give in being cast in either role scenario? Thank you!
First I have to say that everyone has something that they think the industry has a problem with hiring. It’s the old adage, “too old, too fat, too short, too tall, too white, too black, too young, too ugly, too pretty, too ethnic…” I could go on and on. If you feel that you’re falling in the middle and recognize that you have a slight accent and look white… then get rid of the accent. It truly is that simple. For years I was too heavy or too Jewish or not pretty enough, or too pretty… but I still have over 100+ credits on IMDB. What I learned is that we are only limited by our own limitations. Find a great accent reduction person and get rid of that accent. But, trust me, there will be something else “they” don’t like. It truly is okay being exactly as you are – perfectly perfect.

I am contemplating making my own web series. Are casting directors looking at Actors’ webseries or youtube channels? Is there certain content that would more likely be noticed by Casting Directors? Is it worthwhile to be making my own content?
If you have the money and great writing and a great production team behind you, by all means make your own Web Series. Casting Directors will find you when the public finds you. The content needs to be thought out and made specifically for you. More and more of my students are making their own way… it’s okay to step out from the pack, stand up and be counted!

When I was about 13 or 14 I Auditioned for modeling, acting, and singing. I got put through but unfortunately; I did not have the money at the time to fly all the way to New York. As of right now I am at a loss, I am about to get my own apartment and I need the help paying for school. I currently live in Topeka, Kansas. I am so much better now and have had so much more practice.
Please don’t feel like that was your only chance in the world. Finish paying for school, set up a game plan, learn more about the Entertainment business and then move to New York or Los Angeles to give it a go. Find out about some local productions and call the film commission in your city to see what might be going on nearby. Or get a camera, start a youtube channel and get going on your social media. One of my students live in Oklahoma and she’s managed to write and raise money for a Series that she’s shooting over the next couple of months. You can do it. Write out a plan and work your plan.
